Volunteer Activities

Lewiston Elementary School District Board of Trustees: 2013-2022

I was asked to serve on the school board during a budget crisis, then worked with fellow board members to identify a plan to align expenditures with revenues.  As the school budget outlook improved, we developed a job description for a part-time principal/superintendent and part-time teaching position to create a full-time position to overcome recruiting and retention difficulties.  Served as lead for the board on salary and compensation negotiations with teachers and classified staff.  Also led the efforts to secure a consultant for the school’s first facility plan to guide future campus improvements.  Most importantly, enjoyed being part of the entire school team helping students prepare for the future!

Trinity County Master Gardener: 2017 to present

The Master Gardener program exists nationwide through various university programs.  The goal is to make science-based garden information available to schools and members of the public.  A Master Gardner must complete a training course, then meet annual training and volunteer requirements.  It helps to also love gardening!

Projects and events the Trinity County Master Gardner’s are involved with include, the annual spring Plant & Seed Exchange, annual pruning workshops, monthly meetings, Lewiston Botanical Garden, Weaverville Joss House, visiting local gardens and orchards to provide recommendations, phone and on-line responses to questions from county residents.  Presentations are made to local organizations upon request.
